I think it might be possible to build a GPS-less navigation system based on that idea. A chip of that crystal with a couple sensors pointed at it, perhaps installed in a vehicle that can vary its position and orientation a little like you would if you were looking through the crystal. Arduino + RasPi might make it possible...
